Remember what it felt like to be a child
Coregulate may speak to parents, but the child is the reason it exists. A reflection on being misunderstood, softening our hearts, and growing together.
The app is in a parent’s hands. But the child is the reason it exists.
Coregulate approach
The child is the reason
I spend a lot of time talking to parents because parents are the ones using Coregulate. But the deepest reason I am building it is for the child on the other side of that hard moment.
Children deserve adults who are willing to slow down, get curious, and keep learning. As parents, we have the responsibility—and the privilege—of making the path a little gentler for the generation behind us.
That does not mean shaping a child into our idea of who they should become. It means creating the safety, understanding, and room they need to become more fully themselves.
Try this
Do you remember?
Do you remember what it was like to be a kid? To feel misunderstood? To get in trouble even when your intentions were good? To have enormous feelings without the words, power, or experience to explain them?
Perhaps part of why I built this app is that some part of me still remembers. I remember how hard it was to feel misunderstood. In the middle of my own child’s hardest moments, that memory can help me see more than the behavior in front of me.
Before asking, “How do I stop this behavior?” try asking, “What might this moment feel like from where my child is standing?”
Evidence note
We are not so far apart
Parenthood has humbled me. It keeps showing me that adults are not finished products calmly guiding unfinished ones. We become overwhelmed. We want to be understood. We act from old hurt. We need connection, repair, and another chance, too.
The sooner we remember that we are not so different from our children, the sooner we can begin growing alongside them—not only asking what they need to learn, but asking what this moment might be teaching us.
Coregulate approach
A softer place to begin
I know how hard it is to be a parent. Remembering our own childhood does not make the screaming quieter or the hitting safe. It does not remove the need for a boundary. But it can soften the heart of the person holding that boundary.
I hope Coregulate can become a place where parents feel less alone—where we can share what we are learning, the moments we wish we had handled differently, and even the wounds we carried into parenthood from when we were children ourselves.
Our children deserve our best. Sometimes our best begins with remembering that we were children once, too.
